About The Chevrolet Equinox
The first Chevrolet Equinox models were sold for the 2005 model year alongside the badge-engineered Pontiac Torrent.
Both models are almost identical and were originally classed as mid-size crossover SUVs.
In 2018 they entered their third generation of design and were reclassified as compact crossover SUVs as they had been moved onto the D2XX platform.
This new platform brought a range of new engines and a four-wheel-drive system that allows the driver to switch to front-wheel-drive operation when not requiring additional traction.
These SUVs share this platform with the Volt and Cruze compact cars, showing where it gets its new “compact crossover SUV” classification from.
The Equinox was seen as the replacement for many traditional SUV lines by the American automaker, such as:
- Chevrolet Tracker
- Chevrolet Blazer
- Chevrolet Trailblazer
- Chevrolet Captiva
First-generation Equinox models saw sales peak at just over 100,000 units sold per year in the USA.
When the second generation came in the public loved it and sales almost tripled even though the car used the same platform as before.
Much of its success can be put down to the new range of economical engines that were added (the first generation was only available with a V6).
This growth in sales then continued with the third generation when again the engine choices were switched to much smaller yet turbocharged options.
Inside the new model is a suite of modern technologies such as a surround-view camera system and automatic braking.
This only helped push sales from just over a quarter of a million to almost 350,000 in 2019 in the USA alone.
Various alternative fuel versions have also been released in-house or by third parties, including a hydrogen fuel cell and an all-electric version of the Chevrolet Equinox too.
GMC Terrain
General Motors, the parent company of Chevrolet markets several models of theirs themselves but with a slightly more luxury offering.
The price is usually a little higher too but models like the Terrain (their version of the Equinox) come with more features as standard.
You will also find the interior is finished to a higher standard too, as well as more options to choose from that you cant find at at all with the Equinox.
